Hesperidin (HMC) is a bioflavonoid found in high concentrations in citrus fruits, including lemon, orange and grapefruit. Its benefits for the skin are related to the amount of flavonoids that provide strong antioxidant protection, suppress inflammation, lighten the skin and stimulate microcirculation. The most pronounced positive effect of hesperidin on blood vessels - after just a few uses, obvious results are observed, especially in the case of puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. However, despite its advantages, hesperidin is poorly soluble in water, which reduces the rate of its penetration into the skin. Methylation (a form of alkylation of hesperidin) increases the absorption rate of hesperidin, resulting in the formation of hesperidin methyl chalcone (HMC). The benefit of HMC for the skin comes from its strong antioxidant activity. It provides powerful antioxidant protection to cells, reduces the effects of UVA and UVB rays on the skin. Studies have shown that more than 76% of cells are not killed after UVB when hesperidin is used first. HMC is often used as an active ingredient in skin lightening products because it regulates melanin levels. Studies have confirmed that HMC, which is high on the ingredient list, can inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production. HMC also has an anti-melanogenic effect, that is, it reduces the transfer of melanin to skin cells in a similar way to tranexamic acid or niacinamide.
